Despite its title, the album was not recorded at Hammersmith. The recordings were captured primarily at Newcastle City Hall and Leeds Queen Hall during the band’s 1981 tour. It became Motörhead’s first and only UK No. 1 album, cementing the band's reputation as one of the most formidable live acts in rock.
This 12" LP features the classic 11-track live album, including “Ace Of Spades,” “Stay Clean,” “Metropolis,” “The Hammer,” “Iron Horse,” “No Class,” “Overkill,” “(We Are) The Road Crew,” “Capricorn,” “Bomber” and “Motörhead.” The performances capture the relentless energy of the band's 1981 lineup and remain among the most celebrated live recordings in heavy rock.
The album's famous performances of “Ace Of Spades,” “Overkill” and “(We Are) The Road Crew” make it an essential Motörhead release, while the inclusion of “Iron Horse”, recorded in 1980, adds an earlier performance to the programme.
