Cystic Fibrosis

Red Edge Records in connection with Team 51 supports Cystic Fibrosis as a chosen charity.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder that affects mostly the lungs, but also the pancreas, liver, kidneys, and intestine. Long-term issues include difficulty breathing and coughing up mucus as a result of frequent lung infections.

CF is an inherited condition. For a child to be born with CF both parents must be genetic carriers for CF. They do not have CF themselves. More than a million people carry the CF gene.  Nationally, that's one in 25 Australians but the incidence is even higher in Tasmania where it's one in 20 people.

No cure for cystic fibrosis is known, the average life expectancy is between 42 and 50 years in the developed world. Lung problems are responsible for death in 80% of people with cystic fibrosis. One of the main objectives of the CFA Research Trust is to fund this work. With today’s improved treatment most people with CF are able to lead reasonably normal and productive lives. A great amount of time is being directed towards finding new and improved ways of treating CF and of finally finding a cure.
