Description: The Modern Jazz Quartet’s Fontessa is a landmark 1956 jazz album and the group's first release for Atlantic Records. Recorded in New York and at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in New Jersey, the album captures the classic quartet of John Lewis, Milt Jackson, Percy Heath and Connie Kay.
This 12" LP presents the seven-track album, including the sophisticated title suite “Fontessa”, alongside “Versailles (Porte De Versailles),” “Angel Eyes,” “Over The Rainbow,” “Bluesology,” “Willow Weep For Me” and “Woody ’N’ You.”
At the heart of the record is the eleven-minute “Fontessa”, composed by pianist and musical director John Lewis. The piece demonstrates the Modern Jazz Quartet's distinctive ability to combine the improvisational freedom of jazz with a refined, almost chamber-music-like approach. Milt Jackson's vibraphone brings a bluesier contrast to Lewis' precise piano arrangements, while Connie Kay and Percy Heath provide the understated rhythmic foundation.
Fontessa is an important release in the development of the Modern Jazz Quartet's sophisticated cool jazz, bebop and chamber-jazz style. It remains a highly regarded recording for both jazz newcomers and collectors.
