The album marked a major turning point for UB40, becoming their first UK No. 1 album and establishing their distinctive approach to reggae through a collection of songs originally recorded by artists who influenced the band.
This 12" 2LP is the 2016 reissue, released through Virgin / Universal Music as a 180g Deluxe Edition. The 18-track set combines the original 10-track album with eight additional versions, mixes and extended recordings. It features the UB40 classics “Red Red Wine,” “Cherry Oh Baby,” “Many Rivers To Cross,” “Please Don't Make Me Cry,” “Keep On Moving,” and “Johnny Too Bad.”
Produced by Ray “Pablo” Falconer and UB40, Labour of Love sees the band reinterpret songs from reggae, soul and pop influences through their distinctive Birmingham reggae sound. The album's celebrated version of Neil Diamond's “Red Red Wine” became a UK No. 1 hit, helping make the record one of UB40's most successful releases.
The second LP adds alternate and extended versions including “Sufferin’ (Dub Mix),” “Many Rivers To Cross (7" Version),” “Johnny Too Bad (Unexpurgated Version),” “Frilla (12" Version),” “I've Got Mine (Extended Version),” and “Dubmobile.”
For fans of UB40, reggae, dub and classic British reggae-pop, this 180g Deluxe 2LP edition is an excellent addition to any vinyl collection.
